BACOLOD City – Negros Occidental governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. lauded Negrense farmers for the growth of organic farming in Negros Island.

Yesterday, the province celebrated the 12th Negros Island Organic Festival at the provincial capitol ground.

Marañon said the future of agriculture depends on organic farming, as he revealed that the gap between the demand and supply of agricultural products is wide.

“The demand is growing but the supply cannot catch up. There is a need for our farmers to double time,” Marañon stressed.

Dr. Zhou Zeijang, president of the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements in Asia, graced the event.

Zeijang said farming in Negros Island could reach “Organic 3” level, which translates to farming innovation, best practices, transparency, integration, inclusiveness, and true value in pricing.

According to Zeijang, organic farming in Asia is leading globally.

Philippines, according to the Department of Agriculture undersecretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat, is number five with the most number of organic farmers around the world.

Romulo-Puyat also said the country ranked fourth in Asia in terms of agricultural land cultivated through organic farming./PN
