BACOLOD City – “Sobra naman na.”

This was how Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. reacted after the House of Representatives approved a measly P1,000 budget for the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) next year.

Marañon hoped the issue on the CHR budget will be solved in the bicameral session.

CHR provincial head Romeo Baldevarona shared the same wish with Marañon.

“I hope that the Senate will reconsider the proposed 2018 budget for the CHR to about P600 million,” said Baldevarona.

It is the government’s obligation to provide the CHR with a sufficient fund based on the constitution, according to Baldevarona.

He also added that the government has this obligation in line with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations.

Of the 32 representatives who opposed the P1,000 CHR budget, two were from the Negros Island. They were Gary Alejano (Magdalo Partylist) and Jocelyn Limkaichong (Negros Oriental, 1st District)

Rep. Stephen Paduano (Abang Lingkod Partylist), on the other hand, voted for the measly CHR budget because he is “not satisfied with the performance of CHR chairman Chito Gascon.”/PN
