MANILA — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. praised boxing legend and former senator Manny Pacquiao for reigniting national pride and unity after his much-anticipated comeback bout against WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios ended in a draw Sunday in Las Vegas.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Marcos said Pacquiao’s performance — though not resulting in a win — served a higher purpose by once again inspiring Filipinos across the globe.
“The Filipinos won! It ended in a draw, but make no mistake, Manny Pacquiao gave us something far greater than a win — pride and unity,” the President said.
At 46 years old, Pacquiao defied age and odds by going toe-to-toe with the younger and heavier Barrios in a grueling 12-round contest, showcasing his trademark speed and aggressive fighting style. Judges scored the fight 115-113 for Barrios, and 114-114 on two scorecards, resulting in a majority draw.
“At 46, up against a younger and bigger opponent, he reminded the world that the Filipino spirit never backs down,” Marcos added. “Salamat, People’s Champ. We’ll be ready when that rematch comes.”
Pacquiao’s return to the ring after nearly three years away has reignited excitement among his supporters, with talks of a rematch already in the air. Both camps have reportedly expressed interest in staging a second bout.
Pacquiao, the only boxer in history to win titles in eight different weight divisions, last fought professionally in 2021 when he lost to Cuban fighter Yordenis Ugas via unanimous decision.
