BACOLOD City – The Diocese of Bacolod has insisted the Roman Catholic Church’s stance against same-sex marriage.
Reverend Father Felix Pasquin said the plan of House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez to push for the legalization of gay marriage in the Philippines prompts the diocese to reiterate the Church’s teachings on marriage.
Marriage is “not a mere institution subject to the vagaries of time,” said Pasquin, San Sebastian Cathedral rector and the diocese’s social communications head. “Marriage, in the plan of God, is between man and woman.”
Alvarez announced last week that he plans to introduce a bill that will allow same-sex marriage.
He believes allowing gay marriage is a “natural way to manage the population.”
“Siguro dito pwede i-legalize ang (Perhaps, in this respect, we can legalize) same-sex marriage,” said the congressman.
Alvarez led the induction of new Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan members in Negros Occidental here.
According to Pasquin, “God himself is the author of marriage…it is his plan for this covenant that must be followed.”
“By its very nature, marriage in married love is ordered to the procreation and education of the offspring, and it is in them that it finds its crowning glory,” he said.
Pasquin appealed to lawmakers to seek guidance from “God’s eternal divine law” and the “divine positive law” when crafting laws.
They “should never contravene God’s law” for it will “only result to man’s perdition,” he said.
“I trust in the (House) speaker’s good sense,” said the priest./PN
