Massive coastal cleanup urged in Bacolod

BACOLOD City – The Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) is requesting Mayor Evelio Leonardia to spearhead a massive cleanup drive in all coastal areas in the city.

In a resolution passed on Wednesday, the SP enjoined the support from all city employees, academe, nongovernment organizations, civic organizations, private sector, and barangays for the coastal cleanup.

Resolution proponent Caesar Distrito said the current ecological condition of coastal areas is worsening, primarily because of the waste washed up on the shores of the city.

“The city government, in line with its thrust to preserve the environment for the good of its people, has to conduct sustainable activities, such as coastal cleanups, involving the participation of all stakeholders of the City,” Distrito added.

He cited the national government recently showed its “adamant and serious concern for the environment” by the intensified rehabilitation campaigns for Boracay and Manila Bay.

“The city must become a part of this endeavor and must emulate these worthy activities since our coastal areas are now in dire need of our care and attention,” the councilor said./PN
