TYRESE Maxey fired 35 points, including a dominant 20-point outburst in the third quarter, to power the Philadelphia 76ers to a 121-102 victory over the Washington Wizards on Tuesday night (Wednesday in the Philippines) in Philadelphia.
Maxey, coming off a 44-point performance, shot 13-of-26 from the field and extended his streak of 20-point games to 20 this season. He added six assists and four steals in just 29 minutes and sat out the entire fourth quarter.
The 76ers led 66-54 at halftime but saw their advantage cut to 66-61 after Washington opened the third quarter with a 7-0 run. Philadelphia responded by scoring 11 of the next 13 points to regain control.
Philadelphia opened the fourth quarter with a 14-2 scoring run to stretch the lead to its largest at 115-79, allowing coach Nick Nurse to rely on his reserves the rest of the way.
Filipino-American Jared McCain finished with 14 points, Andre Drummond tallied 12 points and 10 rebounds, Jabari Walker posted 10 points and 12 rebounds off the bench and Paul George added 11 for the Sixers.
Tristan Vukcevic led the Wizards with 16 points off the bench, Marvin Bagley III, Justin Champagnie and Will Riley added 13 apiece as Washington fell to 1-11 on the road.
Meanwhile, Anthony Edwards scored 34 of his season-high 44 points in the second half and Julius Randle scored eight points in the extra period to lift the Minnesota Timberwolves to a 149-142 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans.
Edwards sent the game into overtime by driving past Jose Alvarado for a layup with 2.3 seconds left. New Orleans led 129-125 with 1:03 remaining in regulation on Derik Queen’s dunk but went scoreless the rest of the way.
Rudy Gobert finished with 26 points for Minnesota, including three dunks in overtime, and 13 rebounds. Jaden McDaniels had 17 points and Randle 16 for the Timberwolves, who won their third straight.
Trey Murphy III led six Pelicans in double figures with 33 points. Saddiq Bey had 22, and Queen and fellow rookie Jeremiah Fears added 21.
