ILOILO City – Metro Iloilo Water District (MIWD) vowed to reach out to Mayor Jose Espinosa III who recently called for a halt to whatever actions or decisions the water district are taking.
Espinosa would be updated about the plans and programs of MIWD, said General Manager Imelda Magsuci.
“Kami ni (former) Mayor (Jed Patrick) Mabilog meron kaming updating but with Espinosa wala pa since bago lang s’ya pungko. Wala pa kakuha time nga mag-update,” said Magsuci.
Espinosa’s main concern, according to the mayor, was the city government’s apparent lack of voice in MIWD’s operations even if the water district was primarily created for Iloilo City.
“We will reach out to him…nakita namin nga kailangan na talaga,” said Magsuci.
The mayor recently expressed concern over MIWD’s P12-billion water distribution joint venture with MetroPac Water Investments Corp. (MWIC).
“Nga indi man ma-disadvantage ang syudad. Sa matrix nila kag mga charges, kita man gihapon iguon sina,” Espinosa said last week.
According to Magsuci, MIWD would also be updating the Sangguniang Panlungsod.
Espinosa recently expressed interest in getting back the authority to appoint the directors of the MIWD board.
The current appointing authority is Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. of Iloilo province.
Section 3 of Presidential Decree No. 198 or the Local Water District Law provides that if more than 75 percent of the total concessionaires are found in the city, the appointing authority shall be the city mayor. If the total number of concessionaires in the city is below 75 percent, however, the appointing authority shall be the governor.
Espinosa wanted a new count of the number of active MIWD concessionaires.
MIWD serves this city and the towns of Oton, Pavia, Santa Barbara, San Miguel, Leganes, Maasin, and Cabatuan in Iloilo province.
As of November this year, Magsuci said, MIWD’s concessionaires in Iloilo City was at 63.16 percent while that of the province, 36.84 percent./PN
