MANILA – League leaders Meralco Bolts and NLEX Road Warriors will be playing shorthanded in the PBA Governors’ Cup as some of its key players were to play for Gilas Pilipinas cadets in the Southeast Asian Games.

Bolts, currently in third place in the standings with a 4-1 win-loss record, will be without point guards Baser Amer and Chris Michael Tolomia for the entire duration of the SEA Games from Aug. 18 to 30.

In the absence of Amer and Tolomia, Bolts head coach Norman Black will have to rely on seldom-used Simon Atkins and Ilonggo Anjo Caram to man the point guard position.

“Obviously, it’s gonna hurt us but it’s for the country so we have to deal with it. A lot of the teams are sacrificing for the good of the national team and for the good of the country,” said Black.

Road Warriors, now in second place with 5-1, will also be without Kevin Alas, who has played a vital role for the Yeng Guiao-mentored squad in the season-ending conference.

But unlike Bolts, Road Warriors will have players to take over the slot of Alas – Carlo Lastimosa, Larry Fonacier, Jansen Rios, Juami Tiongson, and Cyrus Baguio, who was recently acquired in a trade with Phoenix Fuel Masters.

Other players who will be out for their teams were Von Pessumal of San Miguel Beermen, Kevin Ferrer of Barangay Ginebra Kings, Carl Bryan Cruz of Alaska Aces, and Jeth Troy Rosario of TNT Katropa.

Also in the SEA Games-bound Gilas squad were Ilonggo Kiefer Ravena, Christian Stadhardinger, Bobby Ray Parks Jr., Kobe Paras, Almond Vosotros, and Raymar Jose, who will also be out for Cignal HD Hawkeyes in the PBA D-League finals./PN
