ILOILO – Through the years, a number of persons drowned crossing Uya-oy River separating barangays Bolocaue and Cagbang in Miag-ao town.
But with a new hanging bridge now connecting the two barangays, drowning incidents are expected to drop if not totally eradicated.
On Aug. 9, the provincial government inaugurated the hanging bridge. Stretching over Uya-oy River, it had a total length of 87 linear meters.
The total project cost was P1.5 million – P1.2 million was shouldered by the provincial government while the rest came from the local government of Miag-ao.
Mayor Macario Napulas said the hanging bridge would serve 19 other barangays.
“With the hanging bridge, people could still cross the river even when the weather is bad,” said Napulan.
The hanging bridge could also shorten the travel of residents to the town proper.
Napulan said the hanging bridge could also help bolster tourism in Barangay Cagbang which boasts of their native pottery-making tradition.
During the inauguration, Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. became the first Iloilo governor to set foot on Barangay Bolocaue, some 11 kilometers away from the town proper.
He said building of roads and bridges in far-flung barangays is a priority because these infrastructures are important to people’s lives.
“I know the sacrifices, the dreams and the aspirations of people living in the farms because I also came from the farms,” said Defensor.
Napulan asked the governor’s assistance for another hanging bridge that would connect Barangay Cagbang and Barangay Banbanan. The estimated project cost is P1 million. (EC Garcia and JZ Tormon, Capitol News/PN)
