MANILA – Millennials and single parents who want to work at their own pace and spend more time for family are driving growth in freelancing in the Philippines, a jobs recruitment service said.

From January to November this year, the number of people seeking jobs on Freelancer.com rose to 30.8 million from 26 million, data from the platform showed.

Most of the users are millennials aged 18 to 37.

The Philippines is the top country in Southeast Asia for project-based work with 1 million freelancers.

It ranks fourth globally next to India, the United States and Pakistan, data from Freelancer.com showed.

“The ‘up to you lifestyle’ is a key factor that gives them the freedom to have a good work-life balance,” Freelancer.com vice president Sebastian Siseles said.

Freelancers earn about P10,000 per project, which they can do even if they’re on the beach or while taking care of their kids, Siseles said.

Freelancers need to secure their own insurance and take care of their taxes, but this also gives them more flexibility in spending their money, Siseles added.

“It implies a lot of freedom,” he said. “There are more errands to take care of, but the time you save not commuting, you can invest in taking care of these errands from time to time.”

The Senate and the House of Representatives recently passed the Telecommuting Act to provide equal pay and benefits for workers regardless if they work in the office or stay at home. (With a report from ABS-CBN News/PN)
