ILOILO City – This southern city could be this year’s host of the Miss Universe Philippines (MUP) pageant in September.
Yesterday, Mayor Jerry Treñas announced in a social media post that he received a proposal from a marketing and production company to host the pageant.
“Having the reigning Miss Universe Philippines 2020, Rabiya Mateo, a resident of Iloilo City, I am very much open to this proposal,” said Treñas.
He underscored that he is always supportive of activities that showcase the talents of the Ilonggos and open opportunities to create livelihood and promote local businesses, including local tourism.
According to Treñas, he is now looking at the requirements needed for hosting the prestigious event.
He and Iloilo Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. will also have a discussion regarding this development.
Iloilo City’s possible hosting came into the picture late last year following the crowning of Mateo, the city’s bet to the MUP 2020.
As early as last year, Treñas expressed full support to the idea.
He even cited the Iloilo Convention Center in Mandurriao district as one of the possible venues for the pageant, and the Iloilo River Esplanade as venue for other MUP activities.
The MUP 2021 is expected to gather over 40 candidates from all over the country./PN
