ILOILO — A businessman from Tapaz, Capiz, who was reported missing earlier this week was found dead in a river in Barangay Poblacion, Calinog town, on Saturday morning, December 27, authorities said.
The victim, identified only as alias “Jovic”, was discovered at around 8 a.m., approximately one kilometer downstream from a bridge where police believe he may have entered the river.
According to Police Major Myles Dieron, chief of the Calinog Municipal Police Station (MPS), Jovic left his residence in Tapaz around noon on December 24 without informing his wife of his destination. Concern grew when he failed to return home by December 25, prompting his family to report him missing.
Following the report, police from Tapaz and Calinog coordinated search efforts after receiving information that Jovic may have passed through Calinog.
On December 25, investigators found an abandoned motorcycle near a bridge in Barangay Poblacion, Calinog. The keys were still in the ignition. Jovic’s wife later confirmed that the motorcycle belonged to her husband.
Police also recovered a handwritten note from the motorcycle, which authorities believe may have been left by the victim. The contents of the note were not disclosed to the public.
Further investigation led authorities to review closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera footage showing a person jumping into the river at around 7 p.m. on December 24. Although the individual could not be clearly identified, the footage was taken near the area where the motorcycle was found. Jovic’s wife reportedly believes the person in the video was her husband.
Search operations were intensified with the assistance of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) on December 26, but initial efforts yielded no results.
Operations resumed early the following day, leading to the recovery of Jovic’s body. Authorities said he was found face down in the water and fully clothed.
Medical responders who examined the remains noted no visible signs of external trauma, such as stab or gunshot wounds. Based on initial findings and the circumstances surrounding the case, police said there were no indications of foul play.
The family opted not to request an autopsy.
Residents of Tapaz and Calinog have extended condolences to Jovic’s family, with friends and relatives offering support to his wife and children following the sudden loss.
Local officials noted that the incident has renewed discussions in the community on mental health awareness, emphasizing the importance of seeking help and support during times of emotional distress./PN
