MANILA – Filipino mixed martial arts fighter Carls John de Tomas could be sanctioned by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) if proven to have violated the organization’s anti-doping policy.
According to the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), de Tomas failed an in-competition drug test after his weigh-in on Dec. 8, 2017 for his fight against Alex Perez the following day in Fresno, California, the UFC said in a statement.
“USADA, the independent administrator of the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, will handle the results management and appropriate adjudication of this case,” read part of the statement released on Dec. 31.
“De Tomas is no longer under contract with us when the results were released. But he can still be held liable if proven that he committed [the] violation,” the statement read.
Both de Tomas and Perez were significantly above 10 percent of the flyweight limit at 125 pounds, and the UFC promptly moved the fight to the 135-pound bantamweight division instead.
Se Tomas, who was signed to a two-fight contract with the UFC, suffered a second-round stoppage defeat via anaconda choke from Perez.
The Filipino also missed weight in his UFC debut in June 2017 for UFC Singapore where he lost to Naoki Inoue via unanimous decision./PN
