
FOR DECADES, farmers have been expected to produce more food despite aging equipment, rising production costs, labor shortages, climate change, and dwindling government support. They have carried the burden of feeding the nation using methods that, in many cases, have changed little over generations.
That is why the Department of Agriculture’s decision to deploy agricultural drones across more than 2,100 hectares of rice fields in Iloilo deserves recognition.
This is not merely about introducing new gadgets into farming. It represents a long-overdue acknowledgment that agriculture must embrace innovation if it is to remain competitive and profitable.
The numbers speak for themselves.
A drone can spray one hectare in just eight to 10 minutes — work that would otherwise consume far more time and manpower. It also uses only a fraction of the water and chemical solution required in manual spraying while delivering more accurate and uniform application. Precision farming means lower production costs, less waste, improved crop protection, and potentially higher yields.
Equally important, drone technology directly addresses one of agriculture’s biggest crises — the shortage of farm labor.
Many young Filipinos no longer see farming as an attractive livelihood. Rural workers continue to migrate to cities or abroad, leaving an aging farming population behind. Mechanization is no longer a luxury; it is becoming a necessity for the survival of the country’s food production.
Yet while the Agri Drone Project is commendable, it also raises a familiar concern.
Too many government programs begin with great enthusiasm only to disappear after a pilot phase. Equipment deteriorates. Budgets shrink. Political priorities shift. Farmers are left wondering what happened to the promises of modernization.
That must not happen here.
The success of this initiative should not be measured solely by the number of hectares sprayed this season. It should be evaluated by whether rice yields improve, production costs decline, farmers earn more, and local governments develop the capability to sustain the technology beyond national funding.
Likewise, drones alone will not solve agriculture’s longstanding problems.
Farmers still need reliable irrigation systems, affordable fertilizer, quality seeds, accessible financing, farm-to-market roads, stable market prices, crop insurance, and stronger protection against climate-related disasters. Technology must complement — not replace — a comprehensive agricultural development strategy.
That Iloilo is currently the only province in Western Visayas included in the program presents an opportunity. If the project succeeds, government must move swiftly to expand it throughout the region and eventually across the country. Filipino farmers everywhere deserve equal access to innovations that improve productivity and competitiveness.
Food security will not be achieved through ceremonial launches. It will be built through sustained investments in science, innovation, mechanization, and the people who cultivate the nation’s food.
The sight of drones flying above Iloilo’s rice fields symbolizes hope. But real success will come only when agricultural modernization becomes the rule rather than the exception — when technology is no longer confined to pilot projects, but becomes an everyday tool empowering every farmer.
