ILOILO City – The Business Permits and Licensing Office (BPLO) of the city government plans to impose a moratorium on the issuance of trisikad drivers’ and operators’ permits.
BPLO head Norman Tabud will talk with Sangguniang Panlungsod’s (SP) chairman of the transportation committee Councilor R Leone Gerochi about the proposed moratorium.
“We have realized that our lists of trisikad (cycle rickshaw) associations, their presidents and members are not updated,” said Tabud.
There are some 2,000 trisikad drivers and operators in the metropolis.
As of now, the BPLO is not yet accepting trisikad renewal and new applications.
“After we finalize the lists of all associations and their respective members, we will again open the application of permits,” Tabud said.
It is important that the lists are updated, he said, “so that if anything happens to the passenger, we would know who the concerned driver is.”
“This is to secure the safety of passengers and to make sure that drivers are operating within their designated routes and should wear the identification card given to them, all the time,” said Tabud.
The trisikad is used mainly to ferry passengers short distances along smaller, more residential streets, often to or from jeepneys or other public utility vehicles.
They are also used for transporting cargo too heavy to carry by hand and over a distance too short or roads too congested for motor transport.
During rainy seasons, they are useful as a way to avoid walking through flood waters. Along with the jeepney and the motorcycle-powered tricycle, the open-air trisikad provides shade when needed. (Iloilo City PIO/PN)
