ILOILO City – Here’s one good news for World War 2 veterans in Western Visayas: the Veterans Federation of the Philippines has more benefits for them.

According to Rogelio Moran, the federation’s vice president in the region, the following started in January this year:

* burial assistance of P10,000 (which also benefit the veteran’s surviving spouse);

* P5,000 medical assistance, and

* P50,000 cash incentive upon reaching 100 years old (This is on top of the P100,000 from the national government).

Today, Western Visayans are marking the 72nd Liberation of Panay from invading Japanese military forces – a public holiday in the islands of Panay, Guimaras and Romblon.

According to Moran, there is also a scholarship for immediate family members of an indigent veteran and a P5-million livelihood fund for a veterans’ district and post that can submit a viable project proposal.

The Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) also provides transfer of old-age pension worth P5,000; hospitalization of P1,500 a day (not to exceed 45 days) to the veteran’s surviving spouse (parents of single veterans may also benefit); and P20,0000 burial assistance.

These veterans’ benefits were announced yesterday during the 13th Iloilo Veterans Memorial Day at the Iloilo provincial capitol grounds – a prelude to today’s celebration at the Balantang Memorial Cemetery National Shrine in Barangay Quintin Salas, Jaro district.

After the ceremony, veteran David A. Laibow also launched his book Encounter on a Hillside alongside an exhibit by artists Patrick Anthony D. Caballa and Lewis A. Alfaraz.

It was followed by a floral offering before the General Macario Peralta Monument at Sunburst Park, City Proper District and at the Philippine-American Cemetery along Commission Civil Street in Jaro district./PN
