BACOLOD City – There will be more infrastructure projects to help boost the economy in this capital city, according to Department and Public Works and Highways (DPWH) secretary Mark Villar.
Villar – who was in the city yesterday to attend the inauguration of the P365-million flyover in Magsaysay and Araneta Streets – said they are studying the construction of two additional flyovers in the city.
This is on top of the ongoing construction of the P5-billion Negros-Bacolod Economic Highway, which is expected to be completed before 2019 ends.
These flyover projects are seen to ease the traffic in Bacolod, which is gradually developing with the influx of business investments.
Villar also confirmed that there is an ongoing feasibility study for the construction of the Negros-Guimaras-Panay Bridge.
The bridge – when completed – will link the three islands. Its construction will be financed through a grant from Chinese investors, Villar said.
Villar, however, was not certain if Chinese investors will fully finance the bridge’s construction. The project will cost billions of US dollars, he estimated.
But according to the DPWH secretary, the preparatory works for the inter-island bridge will start late next year.
The bridge will bring huge investments in Negros Island when finished, Villar stressed.
“This will be the longest bridge that will be ever built in the Philippines – stretching a total of 19 kilometers,” said Villar.
He said the people of Bacolod are “fortunate” for “having cooperative and united officials” that eases the realization of infrastructure projects in the city.
During the flyover’s inauguration, a ceremonial drive and unveiling of the marker were conducted.
Rep. Greg Gasataya, Mayor Evelio Leonardia, Vice Mayor El Cide Familiaran and some members of the city council were present.
The Araneta-Magsaysay flyover – with a double-lane pavement, five spans of modular steel, four piers measuring 195 lineal meters, and road approaches extending 280 meters – is the second structure of its kind in the city.
The first one is situated along Lacson-Circumferential road at Bangga Pepsi in Barangay Bata. It was inaugurated on Aug. 19, 2011./PN
