ILOILO City – Drug groups may be changing their tack in shabu distribution, according to the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6).
More women appeared to be selling shabu now, said Superintendent Gilbert Gorero, PRO-6 spokesperson, citing drug-related arrests in recent months.
From March to May this year, PRO-6 recorded 190 apprehensions for drug pushing. Of these, 34 were females or 25 percent of the arrests, said Gorero.
“Drug groups could be thinking the police won’t run after women drug pushers. They’re sorely wrong. We don’t believe only men are capable of trafficking shabu,” stressed Gorero.
Women’s age appeared to be a non-factor in their recruitment into the drug trafficking business.
Just this May 7 in Barangay Ilawod Poblacion, Zarraga, Iloilo a 71-year-old woman was arrested in a buy-bust operation of the police.
Pilar Selorio of Barangay Magancina, Santa Barbara Iloilo sold a sachet of shabu to an undercover police officer for P1,000. She yielded four more sachets.
Selorio was arrested about the same time a 42-year-old woman was busted for shabu in Barangay Tubungan, Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo.
Josefina Doctora was a resident of Barangay Poblacion Ilaya, Barotac Nuevo. The town’s policemen seized from her six sachets of shabu concealed in her underwear and bra.
According to Gorero, from March to May the Iloilo City police made the most number of drug-related arrests at 81. Of these, 18 were women.
The Iloilo Police Provincial Office arrested 58 drug suspects and seven of these were women.
On the other hand, the police in Aklan and Capiz each recorded 19 drug arrests, said Gorero. Three of the 19 arrested suspects in Aklan were women, while there were four women among Capiz’s busted drug suspects.
On April 30, shabu worth P1.1 million was seized from two women in Barangay Benedicto, Jaro, Iloilo City. Jennie Bee Goriona and Vivien Sian were both 37 years old.
A few hours after the two women were caught, their companion, 38-year-old Susan Sobrepeña, was collared in Barangay San Pedro, Molo, Iloilo City.
