MANILA – Roland Muller stood tall on the defensive end as Ceres Negros held Meralco Manila to a scoreless draw in the Philippines Football League at the PFF National Training Center in Carmona, Cavite.
The Ceres goalkeeper produced crucial saves on three shot attempts by Meralco’s Curt Dizon in the final minutes of the Friday game to force another deadlock result.
With the outcome, Ceres remained on second place in the standings with 57 points – 17 wins, six draws and four losses – while Meralco was still on top with 58 points.
Ceres can shoot for a solo lead in the standings if it wins or forces a draw on its final assignment against Global Cebu on Tuesday. A defeat will relegate the Negros team to second place heading into the Final Four.
Meralco had most of its scoring attempts in the opening half behind Negrense Gerardo Valmayor and Jim Ashley Flores but these were well defended by center-backs Manuel Herrera and Joshua Grommen.
In the second half Meralco continued to be aggressive on close-range attempts behind Franco de la Torre, Alvin Sarmiento and Valmayor, but all of their shots were defended by Muller.
Tensions rose in the final minutes. Meralco’s Diego Fornea was served with a red card for his altercation with Ceres’ Jeffrey Christaens, who was slapped with a yellow card.
“It was a heated game,” said Ceres head coach Risto Vidakovic.
“It was very important that we keep the players safe without injuries, with the final round just around the corner,” said Vidakovic. “I think nobody got injured today so it’s a very successful day for us.”/PN
