MANILA – The Manila Police District (MPD) filed on Monday multiple criminal charges before the Department of Justice against a suspect in the death of University of Santo Tomas (UST) law student Horacio Castillo III.
John Paul Solano, a member of the UST-based Aegis Jvris fraternity, was slapped with murder, obstruction of justice, perjury, robbery charges, and violation of the law regulating hazing.
Solana was brought to the Justice department for inquest proceedings.
Last Friday, he surrendered to Sen. Panfilo Lacson and was turned over to the MPD.
He was not at the initiation rites until fellow fraternity members called him to give Castillo medical assistance, Solano told a news conference.
“My only participation was to give medical assistance,” he said. “I’m a registered medical technologist, and I’m a medical help provider.”
Solano also admitted that he lied in his previous statement that he was just a concerned citizen who saw Castillo’s body on a sidewalk in Tondo district and brought it to the Chinese General Hospital on Sept. 17.
Solano and Ralph Caballes Trangia were tagged as primary suspects.
Castillo died of a massive heart attack due to hematoma he sustained during hazing rites, according to the MPD medicolegal team./PN
