MANILA – Sen. Nancy Binay has urged the need for a congressional investigation into the reported delay in the delivery of text messages.
In filing her Senate Resolution No. 246, Binay cited the complaints posted on the Internet by dissatisfied subscribers of Smart Communications and Globe Telecom.
Customers reported problems with sending and receiving text messages on Dec. 3. In a separate advisory, both telecommunications companies said that technical difficulties disrupted their services.
“There is a need to protect mobile subscribers and to ensure that appropriate government agencies proactively and continually create a responsive regulatory environment for a viable, reliable and accessible telecommunications and information infrastructure and services to guarantee the welfare and protection of consumers,” Binay said.
The Senate probe aims to prevent similar issues from happening again in the future, she added.
“This is an issue that affects millions of Filipinos and should not be taken lightly,” the senator from Makati City said.
“We must remember that most of us depend on our mobile phones to reach out to our important contacts, especially out loved ones during emergencies.”
Binay also hoped that her fellow senators will see the network issues as an “urgent matter” that needs to be addressed now.
She added the Filipinos have seen the “misery” it has caused usually in the aftermath of many storms./PN
