MANILA ā€“ National Artist Napoleon Abueva, the ā€œFather of Contemporary Filipino Sculpture,ā€ has died, his family said on Friday. He was 88.

The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) will host necrological services for Abueva, Vice President and Artistic Director Chris Millado said in a post on Facebook.

ā€œState necrological honors at the [CCP] will be announced after consulting with the family,ā€ Millado wrote.

Meanwhile the Metropolitan Museum of Manila expressed its condolences via Twitter.

ā€œOur thoughts and prayers go out to the family of National Artist Napoleon Abueva. Rest in peace, Mang Billy. Salamat,ā€ the Met tweeted.

In 1976, Abueva ā€“ at 46 years old ā€“ became the youngest recipient of the National Artist of the Philippines for Visual Arts.

He was best known for works including ā€œKaganapanā€ (1953), ā€œKiss of Judasā€ (1955), ā€œThe Transfiguration at the Eternal Garden Memorial Parkā€ (1979), ā€œNine Muses at the UP Faculty Centerā€ (1994), ā€œSunburst at the Peninsula Manila Hotelā€ (1994), and ā€œSandugo in Tagbilaran, Bohol,ā€ among others./PN
