MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte has directed the National Intelligence Coordinating Agency and the National Bureau of Investigation to “actively” participate in the government’s fight against the drug menace.
These agencies will join the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, together with the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police, in the renewed war on drugs.
“The President reiterated his resolve to address the drug problem within his term,” said presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella on Tuesday.
On Monday, Duterte led the executive committee meeting of the National Security Council where key issues such as the peace talks between the government and communist rebels, the West Philippine Sea disputes, and the anti-illegal drugs campaign were discussed.
Abella shared the President has approved the enhanced National Security Policy (NSP) 2017-2022, which is designed to safeguard and promote the country’s national security interests.
The latest NSP also ensures the alignment between the national security sector and the recently approved Philippine Development Plan, according to him.
On the peace process with the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army-National Democratic Front, the spokesman said that Duterte acknowledged the two-page joint agreement between the government and the communist rebels after their meeting in Utrecht, Netherlands.
“To ensure that genuine peace talks are realized, the President asked both Panels to agree on clear parameters for ceasefire and the talks,” he also said.
During the meeting, Duterte also directed law enforcement agencies to improve their capabilities in monitoring Philippine airspace and territorial waters./PN
