BACOLOD City – Livestock and poultry raisers in Negros Occidental already lost P846,818 in three days due to heavy rains and flooding brought by Tropical Storm Falcon.
Based on a report released by the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO), livestock and poultry sector in 27 barangays in eight local government units of the province have recorded losses and damages from July 15 to 18.
These areas include Bago, La Carlota and Kabankalan, Pulupandan, Valladolid, San Enrique, Isabela, and Ilog.
Provincial veterinarian Dr. Renante Decena said they consider the amount of damage to be only minimal.
“We have deployed preventive measures to mitigate the losses,” he added.
Decena said all district and city veterinarians, along with livestock technicians and association members, have been trained in disaster preparedness.
“The regular conduct of information and education campaign for livestock and poultry raisers have increased their awareness on disaster preparedness, risk reduction and response,” he added.
Decena said this is an effective way of warning affected and vulnerable areas.
“Veterinary drugs and biologics have been stockpiled at the PVO district field units and are readily available for quick response,” he added.
Earlier, the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist reported rice production losses totaling P7.1 million among 846 farmers in Bago City and in the towns of Valladolid and San Enrique. (With a report from PNA/PN)
