NegOcc ARB groups share resources amid coronavirus

BACOLOD City – Amid the coronavirus disease 2019 outbreak, agrarian reform beneficiary organizations (ARBOs) in the northern parts of Negros Occidental shared their resources to their members and other farmers.

Two ARBOs in Cadiz City, the Hacienda Chambery Farmworkers Association and the Dalayapan Agrarian Reform Cooperative, gave out food packs, while the Nazareth Farmworkers Association of Manapla town released financial assistance to its members and extended help to other ARBs in their area.

On March 30, the Hacienda Chambery group in Barangay Caduha-an distributed food packs to 52 recipients, which includes its members, non-member farmers and seasonal farmworkers.

The group handed out five kilograms of rice, noodles, sardines and eggs to each recipient.

Hacienda Chambery Farmworkers Association has a total of 46 member-ARBs, who acquired a land area of 53 hectares under the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP).

In the same village on March 15, the Dalayapan Agrarian Reform Cooperative provided a total of 97 sacks of rice to its 237 recipients.

The cooperative has 102 member-ARBs and 135 laborers. They cultivate 251 hectares of sugarcane plantation out of the 342 hectares acquired area under the CARP.

In Manapla town, meanwhile, the Nazareth Farmworkers Association released financial assistance to its members and extended help to other ARBs in their area on March 26.

The financial assistance came from the organization’s gains from dividends and quedans (warehouse receipts) out of their sugarcane harvest in the previous crop year.

Based in Barangay Purisima, the Nazareth Farmworkers Association has a total of 63 member-ARBs, who collectively manage a seven-hectare sugarcane plantation.

In a statement on April 2, the Department of Agrarian Reform Negros Occidental-I lauded the ARBOs for their generosity towards their fellow farmers and farmworkers, who are considered as frontliners in food production

“This socially responsible and selfless act is what we need today. It reminds us that whether our resources scarce or abundant, we must also consider and be mindful of the needs of others,” it added.(With a report from PNA/PN)
