BACOLOD City – Some 1,900 campers marked the World Wetlands Day on Thursday at the Pontevedra National High School in Negros Occidental.

They were officers and members of the Youth for Environment in Schools Organization (YES-O) that held a three-day 5th Division camp themed “Negros Occidental Coastal Wetlands: Cradle of Biological Diversity, Safeguard against Natural Disaster.”

The camp involves various activities: environment symposia, recycling showcase, photo exhibits, jingle-making contest, trash bin-painting, tree-planting, “enviro-walk,” “enviro-quiz” and “enviro-palaro,” as well as “Lakan at Lakambini ng Kalikasan” pageant.

YES-Os in 75 secondary schools joined the environmental camp, said Department of Education science supervisor Dannie Clark Uguil.

“We have 1,900 campers and teachers gaining 1,900 opportunities and experiences with more than 1,900 commitments and visions for the environment in this one grand gathering for Mother Earth in celebration of the World Wetlands Day,” Uguil said.

The camp aims to develop among the participants a deeper awareness on the state of the environment, learn environmental values, strengthen YES-O programs, and identify concrete actions toward the protection, preservation and rehabilitation of the environment.

The activity was part of the promotion of the Negros Occidental Coastal Wetlands Conservation Area, the Philippines’ newest Ramsar Site. (PIA/PN)
