BACOLOD City – The Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) is coordinating with local poultry producers to ensure that there is sufficient chicken supply in Negros Occidental during this holiday season.
PVO head Dr. Renante Decena said he will meet with the poultry industry players tomorrow to discuss supply-related concerns.
Decena stressed that even though Negros Occidental currently has a stable supply of poultry products, suppliers must need to prepare for the increase in demand this December.
Negros Occidental also supplies poultry products to Iloilo, Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, and Manila, Decena added.
Figures from the PVO showed that during Christmas and New Year, consumption of dressed chicken reaches up to 3 million heads, 50 percent higher compared to 1.5-million head consumption during regular days.
In Negros Occidental, the average annual production of dressed chicken by commercial growers is estimated at about 24 million heads.
Decena said the production of poultry products in the province is increasing because of the demand matched by the growing number of local producers.
Some local growers integrate with each other to compete with their national counterparts, said Decena.
During the holidays, Decena said the price of dressed chicken usually increase by P3 to P5 per head. (PNA/PN)
