NEGROS Occidental — Pork prices across Negros Occidental have remained stable and relatively low, supported by an ample supply following the province’s recovery from African Swine Fever (ASF), according to Provincial Veterinarian Dr. Placeda Lemana.
“Despite concerns over rising costs, the highest pork price in markets is only around P340 per kilo, while the lowest is P250,” Dr. Lemana said. “At the auction market, live pigs range from P120 to P150 per kilo. Supply has increased because we no longer have ASF cases, which is why prices have dropped.”
With the holiday season approaching, the provincial veterinary office expects demand to rise as households prepare for Christmas gatherings. “We are monitoring the market closely. Prices may increase slightly before Christmas, but typically, buyers purchase pork early for their celebrations,” she added.
Dr. Lemana also addressed the effects of tropical storm “Tino,” which recently hit parts of the province. She noted that Districts 4 and 5 suffered the most damage, especially barangays located near rivers.
“Many carabaos and cattle died after being tied and left unable to escape the sudden flooding. However, poultry and most pigs were not significantly affected, and prices remained stable,” she said.
For now, consumers can expect a steady supply of pork and poultry in the markets, with provincial authorities maintaining close monitoring to ensure price stability throughout the peak holiday season./PN
