NegOcc town marks World Wetlands Day with mangrove planting, coastal cleanup

BACOLOD City – The local government unit of E.B. Magalona in Negros Occidental, through its Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO), spearheaded several activities in the coastal barangay of Tomongtong yesterday, February 5, in celebration of the World Wetlands Day.

This year’s celebration has the theme “Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future.”

Around 300 participants from various organizations conducted coastal cleanup and planted 300 mangrove seedlings at the Tomongtong Mangrove Eco-Trail.

MENRO-designate Jojo Vargas said participants included personnel from Bago City ENRO; pupils of Tomongtong Elementary School and Jose M. Consing Memorial School; barangay officials, health workers and tanods of Tomongtong; and officers and members of Tomongtong Women’s Association.

In addition, Bago City ENRO, headed by CENR Officer Roseviel Dematulac, conducted a Dalaw-Turo Program – an engaging information and education campaign aimed at raising awareness about the importance of wetlands and mangroves in environmental conservation./PN
