Negrense boxer to fight for OPBF title tonight

MANILA – Negrense boxer Warlito Parrenas aims to snatch the OPBF bantamweight title from Japanese boxer Keita Kurihara when the two boxers crossed paths tonight at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan.

Aside from getting another international belt after five years, the Cadiz City, Negros Occidental native Parrenas is hoping to get back on the winning track after dropping two straight bouts to end 2018.

Parrenas first suffered a knockout loss to Ryoichi Funai for the WBO Asia Pacific super flyweight title before dropping a close unanimous decision to another Japanese Sho Ishida.

“I have prepared hard for this fight considering that I can from defeats last year,” said Parrenas. “I am hoping to get over the hump and capture the OPBF championship from Kurihara.”

Parrenas has previously retired from boxing after losing to Naoya Inoue for the WBO world super flyweight title in 2015 but made his return two years later and is again beginning his climb for another world title shot.

Kurihara, however, will be a tough customer for Parrenas as the latter is on a four-game winning run, with three of it via stoppages, including against Filipino boxer Ryan Lumacad.

The 35-year-old Parrenas will be entering the match with 26-9-1 win-loss-draw ring record, including 23 stoppage wins, while the 26-year-old Kurihara has 13-5-0 card, with 11 KO wins./PN
