SAN JOSE, Antique – After slowing down as the 2017 Palarong Pambansa winds down to a close, Negros Island Region (NIR) claimed a gold medal haul on Friday courtesy of their taekwondo jins.

Bacolodnons Jamie Hannah Agaloos, Arielle Beronio and Mary Angeline Alcantara topped their respective divisions in the elementary girls’ kyorugi event to jumpstart NIR’s new gold medal spree.

Agaloos, who earlier won gold in the poomsae event, ruled the over 136-144 cm division beating silver medalist Lei Mendoza of Region III and bronze medalists Kristiana Tiu of NCR and Kamille Calaycay of CAR.

Beronio, for her part, showed her wares to dominate the over 128-136 cm event over Antonette Medallada of NCR, Sherrie Dimaano of Region XI and Rozzette Tanquion of Region X.

Alcantara, meanwhile, did not have a hard time winning gold in the over 152-160 cm event, where she defeated Kynna Pilarca of Region IV, as well as Ashley Diaz and Aezra Liporada of CAR.

Other gold medal winners for NIR in taekwondo are Cadiz City, Negros Occidental-native Kurt Delasa in the over 152-160 cm division, Murcia, Negros Occidental-native Lester Paolo Escasinas in finweight and Stephen Gale in the elementary boys’ 120-128 cm.

The lone silver medalist is Michael Edwin Tarucan (over 144-152 cm), while bronze medal holders are Allen Casana (over 136-144 cm), Nina Verdeflor (over 144-152 cm), Mervonne Nicor (over 160-168 cm), Kint Tarucan (featherweight), and Rodney Posecion (middleweight).
