MANILA – Negrense Robert Landero will finally have a chance to showcase his skills in the boxing ring as he battles Indonesian Tibo Monabesa for the World Boxing Council’s (WBC) International light flyweight belt today at Balai Sarbini Convention Hall in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The match was supposed to take place last Saturday evening. It was postponed because the Pontevedra, Negros Occidental-native Landero and his coach, Jun Arlos were under quarantine at that time.
“Minove nila ‘yun laban namin na dapat noong Sabado sa April 14 since naka-quarantine pa kami sa hotel by that time,” Arlos said in an interview with Philboxing.com.
Arlos added that Landero, on Friday, wanted to weigh in for the match but was prevented since he is still under the mandatory five-day quarantine after arriving in Jakarta, Wednesday.
Landero was thankful that the match will go on despite it was postponed twice. Two weeks ago, he was not able to fly to Jakarta due to a lack of a Visa.
“Sa akin, masaya lang ako na kahit papaano ay matutuloy pa din ang laban ko,” Landero said. “I am ready to fight na sana noong Sabado but strict sila sa quarantine rules nila dito sa Indonesia.”
The upcoming fight will be the Negrense’s first title match after suffering losses in an attempt to clinch the International Boxing Organization and World Boxing Association’s World minimumweight titles in 2018. He will enter the battle with an 11-4-2 win-loss-draw ring record, including two victories by way of stoppages.
Monabesa, on the other hand, has an impressive record. Out of his 23 matches, 20 of which were victories including eight by way of stoppages, two deadlocks, and one defeat./PN
