SAN JOSE, Antique – The record setting performance of Kate Julienne Martinez bannered the medal-heavy Day 4 of the Negros Island Region Athletic Association (NIRAA) in the 2017 Palarong Pambansa on Wednesday.

The Bago City, Negros Occidental-native Martinez claimed gold in the elementary girl’s discus throw event with her 35.56-meter heave, which erased the 33.07-meter record set by Bacolodnon Maika de Oro in the 2007 Palarong Pambansa in Tacloban.

Finishing behind the B. Araneta Elementary School standout are Irish De Guzman of Region II, who had 30.22 meters and Jeweliza Sarabasing of Region X, who had 26.65 meters.

Ma. Ferime Gleam Bajado, meanwhile, contributed a gold medal in the secondary girl’s 30 meters archery before settling for second place in the 40 meters event in Sibalom.

Negrense Carmille Buhat also clinched a gold medal for NIR in the eight-ball single event billards, while Jamie Hannah Agaloos won a gold medal courtesy of the elementary poomsae event.

Winning silver for NIR are Katherine Ann Quitoy in elementary javelin throw, John Boy Purisima of secondary discus throw, Bernalyn Bejoy of secondary 400 meter hurdles and table tennis team of Ann Gella Borbon, Jacqueline Casilao, Cyres Sevilla, Alyssa Toleco./PN
