MANILA – Filipina long jumper Marestella Torres-Sunang will be gunning for her fifth Southeast Asian Games gold medal when she competes in the 2017 edition of the biennial event in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The San Jose, Negros Oriental-native Torres-Sunang said she will be preparing hard for the tournament slated from Aug. 19 to 31 as she aims to do better than her bronze medal finish in 2015 in Singapore.
“Kaya pa naman nating manalo. Target talaga natin ang ginto,” said the 36-year-old Torres-Sunang, who represented the country in the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil.
“Paghahandaan talaga natin ‘yan dahil gusto kong makabawi dun sa performance ko sa Singapore,” she added. “Kayang kaya ko pa naman mag compete. Ang magpapa-retire lang sa akin ay injury.”
The former Far Eastern University Tamaraws jumper has four SEA Games gold medals so far which she won in 2005 in the Philippines, 2007 in Thailand, 2009 in Laos, and 2011 in Indonesia.
Torres-Sunang did not participate during the 2013 edition in Myanmar after giving birth to her first child. In 2015, she had her worst performance in the biennial event after finishing third.
Torres-Sunang remains the holder of the SEA Games record in the women’s long jump event at 6.71 meters, which she tallied during the 2011 SEA Games in Palembang, Indonesia.
However, 6.71-meter mark is just the second best of Torres-Sunang as she tallied 6.72 meters during the Kazakhstan Open in July 2015 that merited her third Olympic stint./PN
