MANILA – Negrenses Mark Nonoy of the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers and Kent Jane Pastrana of De La Salle University Lady Archers were hailed as top rookies in the UAAP Season 82 basketball competition.

The La Carlota, Negros Occidental-native Nonoy emerged as Rookie of the Year awardee in the men’s division after leading the Growling Tigers to the stepladder semifinals round.

Nonoy, a former standout of Hua Siong College of Iloilo, earned 39.29 statistical points after submitting averages of 10 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.3 assists this UAAP Season.

Despite winning the ROY trophy, Nonoy is still far from satisfied as he hopes to help the Growling Tigers go deep in the playoffs.

UST is set to face No. 2 seed University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons in the semifinals today.

“What we need to do now is to win. We have the awards but we have to win every game because [the championship] is the award we really want,” Nonoy said. “We’ll have to do our best to win against UP.”

Victorias City, Negros Occidental-native Pastrana was named Rookie of the Year in the distaff side after emerging as the leading scorers for the Lady Archers this season.

Pastrana, a product of Doña Montserrat Lopez Memorial High School, was also part of the Mythical Five along with MVP Grace Irebu of UST, Adamson’s Mar Prado, National University’s Jack Animam, and Far Eastern University’s Clare Castro./PN
