PBA slaps P30K fine on San Miguel’s Nabong

MANILA – The PBA Commissioner’s Office has slapped a P30,000 fine on San Miguel Beermen’s forward Kelly Nabong for his dangerous foul on Meralco Bolts guard Chris Newsome during their game recently in the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup.

Apart from the hefty penalty, PBA commissioner Willie Marcial said he gave Nabong a stern warning regarding his dirty antics on the court as similar incidents in the future will lead to a suspension.

The 6-foot-6 Nabong was called for a flagrant foul during the Beermen-Bolts match last Sunday after initiating a collision with a driving Newsome that sent the latter crashing to the floor.

Referees deemed Nabong’s move as just a flagrant foul penalty, but was still thrown out from the match after being given a technical foul for a verbal altercation with Bolts’ Raymond Almazan following Newsome’s fall.

The 30-year-old Nabong was no stranger from being involved in on-court altercations through his eight-year PBA career that he spent with three teams in Beermen, NorthPort Batang Pier and the Bolts.

In 2013, Nabong, who was then with Batang Pier, was slapped with a two-game suspension and P60,000 fine for trading punches with San Mig Coffee Mixers (now Magnolia Hotshots) big man Jean Marc Pingris.

Two years ago, Nabong was slapped with a team suspension by the Bolts for his altercation with then Meralco assistant coach Jimmy Alapag./PN
