BACOLOD City – A hero’s welcome was tendered to the two Negrense boxers who bagged gold medals in the recently concluded 30th Southeast Asian Games.

Rogen Ladon, who won in the men’s flyweight division and James Palicte in the men’s Light welterweight division, arrived yesterday in Bago City, Negros Occidental.

City mayor Nicholas Yulo led the turnover of cash incentive worth P50,000 to each boxer during an awarding rites at the Bantayan Park , Barangay Poblacion, Bago City.

Yulo said the Sanggunian Panlungsod passed a resolution granting cash incentives to the medalists as well as P10,000 to their trainers. He lauded the effort of the two athletes who gave glory and pride to the city.

According to Yulo, Bago City has already produced several talented boxers, citing late Mayor Manuel Torres who spearheaded the boxing program for the Bagonhons.

Yulo explained that part of the program offers grassroots training for Bago residents who are interested in boxing, by then they select those who have the full potential and prepare them for competitions.

Ladon, for his part, said he will invest the cash aid for his preparation for more upcoming tournaments.

Palicte, meanwhile, said he will use the incentive for the construction of their house.

They advised aspiring boxers to have a proper training and have a discipline in order to achieve the same./PN
