Negros Occidental secondary girls volleyball team

NEGROS Occidental repeated as champions in Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet 2019 secondary girls volleyball on Thursday at the CPC Engineering Department in Arnaldo Boulevard in Roxas City.

The Bacolod Tay Tung High School Thunderbolts-led Negros team clinched its second straight title after a 25-11, 25-18, 25-19 straight set triumph over Iloilo in the knockout championship match.

The Negrenses waxed hot early in the first two sets as they quick build a double-digit advantage behind Joan Marie Monares, Shane Carmona and Alyssa Bertolano before thwarting Iloilo’s runs.

The Ilonggas showed some life in the third period as they surged to a 15-5 lead but a spirited fightback by Negrenses behind Monares, Carmona and Rhean Almendralejo completed their straight set win.

“We are happy that we were able to defend our crown. That was our goal since we got here in Capiz,” Monares said. “It is blessing for us to again represent Western Visayas in Palarong Pambansa.”

Also part of the team were Erika Deloria, Katherine Cortez, Nikha Cabasac, Beatrice Decena, Kiesha Bedonia, Aurea Alvero, Melody Pons, and Myrtle Escanlar.

Negros Occidental also emerged as the winner in the secondary boys volleyball following a come-from-behind win against the favored Iloilo delegation.

Trailing two sets to none, the Living Stones InternationalSchool-represented Negros showed its wares in the next three sets to pulled off the victory.

Meanwhile, Iloilo province captured the championships in elementary boys and girls volleyball after defeating Aklan and Negros Occidental, respectively./PN
