SAN CARLOS CITY, Negros Occidental – The new 225-bed city hospital has opened in Barangay Palampas.
“Operations in the new hospital will start immediately after the electricity and other essential installations are completed,” said Dr. Archilles Ponferrada, chief of hospital.
“We also plan to bring in additional services for ultrasound; computed tomography, or CT scan; and magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI,” the doctor said.
The P180-million new hospital is on a 1.9-hectare area in Sta. Ana, approximately 700 meters from city hall.
Ponferrada said the old hospital is no longer conducive for patients, most of whom are accommodated in alleys and hallways due to lack of rooms.
The old hospital has a 50-bed capacity but currently accommodates more than 200 patients.
The patients come not only from San Carlos City but also from nearby localities, including the municipalities of Calatrava, Toboso and Vallehermoso, and the cities of Canlaon, Escalante and Guihulngan.
The new facility needs 27 doctors, including specialists and surgeons. Currently it has 22 doctors. Additional physicians and nurses will be hired in 2017.
The first three phases of the building were opened, while the other two stages of construction are still ongoing.
Phase 1 consists of the administrative office, doctors’ offices, outpatient department, clinical laboratories, blood bank, pharmacy, and emergency rooms, while Phase 2 includes two operating rooms (major and minor), delivery room, nursery, central sterile supply room, and three obstetrics wards, said Architect Hans Christian Dela Victoria of the City Engineering Department.
The ground floor of the two-storey Phase 3 is made up of two surgical wards, intensive care unit, medical ward, pediatric ward, two isolation wards, eight isolation rooms, and an eye center, while the second floor with elevator consists of four general wards and 12 semiprivate rooms.
The TB Dots, gender sensitivity clinic and HIV clinic are located in between phases 1 and 2 buildings.
The two-storey Phase 4 will house the canteen, staff dining and general kitchen, and hemodialysis center, while the second floor will have 12 private rooms and two wards.
Dela Victoria said Phase 5 will consist of a generator room, laundry department, oxygen manifold room, storage area, and central water tank. A morgue will be built in a separate area but within the vicinity. (PIA/PN)
