ILOILO City – A sedan overshot the road, hit a coconut tree and fell into a canal in Barangay Dawis, New Lucena, Iloilo.
The crash turned fatal for the driver, a resident of San Vicente Village, Barangay Casinglot, Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental.
Rescuers from the adjacent Pototan town extracted the 27-year-old Erwin James Mayol from his Toyota Vios (plate number KGU-128) about an hour after the crash at around 7:45 p.m. on Sept. 14, police said.
Sustaining head injuries, Mayol was taken to the Iloilo Provincial Hospital in Pototan.
Attending physician Dr. James Bacus pronounced him dead at around 8:45.
Mayol was on his way to this city from Pototan at the time. He swerved his car to the right trying to avoid a reflectorized bamboo pole in the middle of the road when he reached Barangay Dawis, New Lucena.
The car overshot the road, crashed against a coconut tree and fell into the canal, turning upside-down, police said.
Police said the damage the car incurred suggested that Mayol was speeding.
New Lucena police recovered several items from the car, including a brown backpack and a black handbag containing a laptop computer, a tablet computer and documents.
They also found a black pouch containing documents, and a card case containing two credit cards, two debit cards, an identification card, two sunglasses, and an undetermined amount of cash./PN
