KALIBO, Aklan – Except for petty crimes, no major incident or casualty were reported during the Ati-Atihan Festival.
Even petty crimes during the celebrations from Jan. 6 to 15 dropped 27 percent, according to the municipal police.
Forty petty crimes were recorded during the period (down from 55 during the festival last year), and 10 of them were solved, police said.
Police carried out Oplan Ati-Atihan 2017 to guarantee the security of tourists, balikbayans and merrymakers.
Physical injuries decreased 50 percent to 12 cases from 24, while theft was down 38 percent to 16 cases from 26.
Incidents of malicious mischief, threat, and alarm and scandal reached 12. Five alarm and scandal cases occurred outside festival zones.
“Concerted efforts to maintain peace and order and ensure public safety resulted in the peaceful and successful celebration of the Ati-Atihan,” said Chief Inspector Terence Paul Sta. Ana, municipal police chief.
Around 250 officers from the Regional Public Safety Battalion (RPSB) and the provincial offices augmented local forces.
Backpacks were checked, glass beverage containers were banned, while merrymakers were reminded not to carry guns or replicas.
Police also distributed flyers containing crime prevention tips and played their crime prevention jingle.
Meanwhile the Philippine Army deployed K-9 teams and medical and security personnel to security control points and staging areas.
