MANILA – Ten people died when a small plane crashed into a house in Plaridel town in Bulacan province, aviation and police officials said.
The Piper PA-23 Apache six-seater twin-engine light aircraft, operated by Lite Air Express, had just taken off from a small airport, said Eric Apolonio, spokesman for the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP).
The plane was carrying five people, including the pilot, and was en route to Laoag in northwestern Luzon when it crash-landed and smashed into the house, Apolonio said.
“All plane occupants died in the aircraft accident with collateral damage to a house with five occupants who also perished,” he said.
The plane hit the house of an 80-year-old woman, who was inside at the time, police spokesman Chief Superintendent John Bulalacao said in a text message.
“The house was burned while the aircraft was totally wrecked,” Bulalacao said.
CAAP ordered all aircraft operated by Lite Air Express to be grounded pending the result of investigations.
Two other people on the ground were injured by burning debris, Plaridel police chief Superintendent Julio Lizardo said by phone.
The cause of the crash was not immediately known.
Witnesses said the plane hit a tree and electric post before slamming into the house.
Television footage showed parts of the plane wreckage and the shattered walls of the house at the still-smoldering crash site. (Reuters and AP)
