MANILA – Sen. Paolo Benigno Aquino IV was still waiting for Justice secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II to publicly apologize for tagging him and other lawmakers to the Marawi City siege.
“We appreciate the clarification of the DOJ pero ang inaantay natin ay pag-so-sorry. Kasi ’pag mali ang ginawa mo, tama lang na mag-apologize ka,” said Aquino.
On Thursday last week Aquino said Aguirre already called him, apologized and claimed he got “confused” with all the information he was receiving.
Aguirre earlier said the meeting between Aquino, Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV, Rep. Gary Alejano, and former presidential political adviser Ronald Llamas, and Marawi leaders may have “probably and possibly” sparked the terroristic acts in the besieged city.
According to Aquino, he asked the Justice secretary to publicly clarify and apologize for insinuating that he was present in the May 2 meeting.
Meanwhile the Senate committee on public information and mass media will investigate Aguirre’s claims.
“I am alarmed by the proliferation of fake news on the internet adversely affecting public and private interests,” the committee chairwoman Grace Poe said.
Sen. Joel Villanueva also said he will file a bill penalizing those who spread fake news and disinformation in print, broadcast or online.
“Those who author lies and fake news should not be tolerated, most especially when public interest is at stake,” Villanueva said, adding that there must be a balance between democracy and responsibility.
Aquino said he will confront Aguirre at the committee inquiry.
“Gusto kong marinig mula sa kanya na kung ano talaga ang nangyari at kung bakit siya naniwala sa fake news,” said Aquino. “Kung ang Justice secretary natin mismo may problemang ganyan, hindi lang ito problema ng kanyang ahensiya, problema po iyon ng ating buong bansa.”/PN
