BACOLOD City – Police in Negros Island Region received no report of random discharge of firearms during the New Year revelry.

An information officer for the Police Regional Office 18 said information dissemination, especially through the press, helped a lot.

No case of indiscriminate firing was recorded at the Bacolod City Police Office, Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office and Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office as of Jan. 1, said Chief Inspector Dianne Grace Catedral.

But a fire struck Bayawan City, Negros Oriental and killed a 48-year-old businesswoman, Catedral disclosed.

Firefighters found the body of Arlene Pinanonang, a resident of Purok 7, Barangay Tinago, Bayawan City, in a corner on Real Street, Barangay Boyco.

A fire call was made around 12:54 a.m. on Jan. 1. The blaze started at a tarpaulin next to a store, said Catedral.

She also credited the intensified campaign against loose firearms for the generally peaceful New Year.

Catedral stressed that the police did not give drug personalities and other criminals a holiday, and this helped prevent crimes.

Earlier Director General Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, asked the police not to use their service firearms during the New Year celebration.

Dela Rosa also coined two commandments against indiscriminate firing:

* “Thou shall not fire thy guns indiscriminately as it may hit, kill and injure thy neighbor.”

* “If thy neighbor fires his gun indiscriminately, thou shall make sure to take photos and videos to be reported to the PNP and uploaded.”

The PNP urged citizens to report any incident of indiscriminate firing and use of prohibited firecrackers.

Using mobile phones, they can document gun holders who will fire their weapons indiscriminately and immediately provide the police such information so they can quickly act, said the PNP./PN
