KALIBO, Aklan – Undersecretary Arturo Valdez told local personnel of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) that they were working “under a new DENR,” with Secretary Gina Lopez at the helm.
“We will not tolerate any environmental destruction,” Valdez said before staffers of the provincial DENR office led by Ivene Reyes.
“Social justice” was now one of the department’s performance indicators, the Negrense official stressed.
“We must work as one big office, where actions must be closely coordinated,” said Valdez, pointing out that DENR’s regional directors also work with fellow regional directors in the Environmental Management and the Mines and Geosciences bureaus.
The provincial ENR office covers 16 municipalities.
Valdez led the Environmental Crime Task Force that recently stopped a Chinese vessel from illegally dredging the Aklan River.
He served a cease-and-desist order on MV Zhong Hai 18 and the commissioning company STL Panay Resources Company Ltd.
Operatives from the National Bureau of Investigation, provincial government, Philippine National Police, Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine Army, and DENR regional and provincial offices accompanied him.
“This will serve as warning for others whose activities or actions are detrimental to the environment and making the life of the people miserable,” Valdez said.
It will show them that “we are serious enough to run after them and to implement the environmental law to its fullest,” he added.
Meanwhile Regional Director Jim O Sampulna reminded the DENR personnel to do well not only their jobs but also “what is good for the environment and what would benefit the people.” (With DENR/PN)
