MANILA – The National University Pep Squad clinched its fourth straight championship after another dominant performance in the UAAP Season 79 Cheerdance competition on Saturday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The NU Pep Squad lifted the level of difficulty in the competition with its futuristic-themed routine to make up for its controversial win last season in a performance marred by errors.
The Bulldogs collected a total of 711 points — 370 points on dance, 89 points on stunts, 84 points on pyramid, 82 points on tosses, and 89 points on tumbling — to take home the crown anew.
The NU Pep Squad, which moved closer to the UAAP record five-peat accomplishment of the University of Santo Tomas Salinggawi Dance Troupe, took home a P340, 000 champion’s purse.
Aside from the main competition, the NU Pep Squad also dominated other areas of the competition, including the group stunts and the best toss and top pyramid citations.
“This is a sweetest victory namin after that very controversial victory last year. Ito ang gusto naming patunayan sa tao na kami nandito, binibigay iyong best performance na kaya naming ibigay,” said NU Pep Squad head coach Ghika Bernabe.
Meanwhile the Far Eastern University has returned for a podium finish after amassing 658.5 points for its Broadway-themed display. The Adamson University also surprisingly finished third with 655 points for its Hawaiian-inspired performance.
Eight-time champion UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe finished fourth with 650 points, followed by the University of the East Pep Squad (645), the De La Salle Animo Squad (560), and the Ateneo Blue Babble Battalion (512)./PN
