ILOILO City – Three tanods (watchmen) were shot to death in Barangay Camanci, Numancia, Aklan. Another watchman and a minor were hurt in the shooting.

Chief tanod Walter Rembulat, Rogelio Sarson and Jestoni Isidro died of multiple gunshot wounds on the body, police said.

Tanod Danilo Villorente and 9-year-old Ellaija Salibio sustained gunshot wounds on the body and left leg, respectively. They were confined at the Saint Gabriel Medical Center in the capital town of Kalibo.

One of the suspects in the Wednesday shooting was identified as Kevin Canson of same barangay. A police hot pursuit led to this arrest on Thursday in Barangay Poblacion, Numancia. He had a cohort, who remained at large.

The victims were near the public plaza around 10:20 p.m. when two men riding in tandem on a motorcycle pulled over nearby, Senior Inspector Gio Colimbao, Numancia police commander, told Panay News.

Canson was driving the motorcycle. His back rider approached Rembulat, fired at the latter several times and rushed back to the motorcycle. The other victims tried to arrest Canson’s companion, but Canson fired at them, too.

“The minor was near the shooting site and accidentally hit by a bullet,” Colimbao said.

Ten empty shells of a .45-caliber pistol were recovered from the crime scene.

Canson was detained at the Numancia police station. He was facing charges for murder (three counts) and frustrated murder (two counts), police said. Officers were still hunting his cohort as of this writing./PN
