ILOILO City – Mary Angelie Cabañez wanted to be in the top 10 passers of the June 2017 Nurse Licensure Examination (NLE).

Amo gid ni ang gina-dream kag gina-pray ko,” she told Panay News yesterday. “Siempre kon gina-pray mo, i-claim mo na, so to some extent, nag-expect man ko.”

Obviously the native of Banga, Aklan achieved more than what she expected.

Cabañez, a graduate of the West Visayas State University (WVSU), ranked No. 1 in the NLE, posting a passing percentage of 86.20. She led the 3,882 passers out of the 11,176 examinees.

She is one of the eight WVSU graduates who made it to the top 10.

“Thankful gid ko sa Ginoo kay ginpangamuyoan gid namon ni,” she said. “Nakita gid namon sang mga batch mates ko ang effort sang kada isa.”

Cabañez said she has no secret in topping the exam. “Palarehos man kami nga nagtuon kag nagpangamuyo.”

But she noted that not “killing” oneself with the review helped. It is also important to find time to relax, she said.

Studying at the WVSU, specifically in the College of Nursing, was also a big factor, Cabañez said.

Dako gid nga bulig ang West,” she said. “Of course, sila gid ang nag-build sang foundation sa akon pagtuon sa Nursing, tapos gin-reinforce pa gid sang amon nga review.”

Meanwhile Cabañez plans to volunteer in Western Visayas. Later, if there is any, she would grab a chance to work overseas. “If may opportunity man nga makagwa, mas nami.”

Other WVSU graduates in the top 10 are Nechelyn Consular (No. 4), with a passing percentage of 84.80; Alyssa Jude Montalban (No. 5), 84.60; Joane Christine Pedrola (No. 6), 84.40; Lourence Ann Garrido (No. 7), 84.20; Julie May Suganob (No. 7), 84.20; Darlyne Esposo (No. 8), 84.00; and Princess Meliton (No. 9), 83.80.

‘CENTER OF EXCELLENCE’

Meanwhile the WVSU aims to become a Center of Excellence in Nursing this year.

It is continuously upgrading instruction and curriculum at the College of Nursing, according to the university president Dr. Luis Sorolla.

“Our instructional strategies gina-improve man naton, especially kay may hospital man kita,” he told Panay News yesterday. “Ang related learning experiences sang mga estudyante gina-upgrade man naton ini pirme.”

The College of Nursing is currently a Center of Development in Nursing.

Sa subong, sa akon pagbanta, ready na kita (for the Center of Excellence status),” said Sorolla. “Within this year basi mapa-schedule kita for evaluation (by the Commission on Higher Education).”

That eight WVSU graduates made it to the top 10 of the recent NLE — including one who ranked No. 1 — is a “big honor,” Sorolla said.

“This is a testimony nga ang aton nga nursing program is one of the best in the country,” he said. “In fact 100-percent passing percentage kita for four consecutive years with topnotchers.”

But the WVSU slid down to No. 2 among top-performing schools in the June 2017 NLE, posting a passing percentage of 99.21. One out of its 126 examinees did not pass.

Sorolla remains optimistic.

Siguro waay sia sa maayo nga kondisyon during the exam. Mabawi lang sia sa dason,” he said of the non-passer. “Anyway, it is not bad. We are second. It’s not the end of the world.”/PN
