MANILA – While the 2017 Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in Malaysia is still far from commencement, a sure gold medal has been taken away from the Philippine delegation.
Filipina weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz will not be part of the country’s contingent in the biennial games slated from Aug. 19 to 31 following the organizer’s decision to remove the women’s weightlifting event.
Philippine Weightlifting Association (PWA) president Monico Puentevella said he was recently informed the verdict of the Malaysia SEA Games Organizing Committee (MASOC). The decision has deprived Diaz, a Rio de Janeiro Olympics silver medalist, a good chance for a gold plum.
“Kinausap ko na siya na cheerleader na lang muna niya kami at bigyan ng inspirasyon ang mga kasamahan niya na kasali sa SEA Games,” said Puentevella.
“Nag-promise naman siya kahit kasabay sa SEA Games iyung isa sa sasalihan niyang Olympic qualifying tournament para sa 2020 Tokyo, sasama rin siya sa national weightlifting team na pa-SEA Games,” he added.
Puentevella, a former Bacolod City mayor, added that the decision of the MASOC to take away some of the events where the Philippines had a high chance of taking home a medal was a huge blow.
“Malaking dagok ang pagkawala ng female weightlifting kasi we aim to have a better performance from our sixth place finish in the SEA Games two years ago. Malaki ang laban sana ni Hidilyn sa 53-kilogram category,” Puentevella said.
“I don’t know how it will affect our campaign but our joint Philippine Sports Commission- Philippine Olympic Committee Task Force SEA Games should look into how many gold medals were won by our lady athletes the last time around and then look at other sports na inalis din ang mga women’s,” he added.
The 25-year-old Diaz, who will be competing in another Asian tournament coinciding with the Games, bagged silver in the 53-kilogram weight category of the Rio Olympics last August./PN
