MANILA – Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings head coach Tim Cone believes his prized center Greg Slaughter is the only one who can stop the dominance of San Miguel Beermen big man June Mar Fajardo.
Slaughter is “the only real answer to June Mar, and we’re fortunate to have him,” Cone said during Kings’ practice. “If he (Slaughter) is healthy, he can match up well with June Mar inside.”
The 7-foot center Slaughter and 6-foot-10 Fajardo have been bitter rivals since their collegiate days, with the former playing for University of the Visayas and the latter – the reigning four-time PBA Most Valuable Player – with University of Cebu.
Slaughter had a decent start for Kings in the PBA Philippine Cup, tallying 24 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks in their 89-78 win over Magnolia Hotshots on Dec. 25, 2017.
Slaughter and Fajardo may renew their rivalry when Kings and Beermen face each other on Jan. 28, in a rematch of the 2016-2017 PBA Philippine Cup finals.
“[The] All-Filipino Cup is really (Slaughter’s) conference,” said Cone, a 20-time PBA champion coach.
“People don’t remember that, two years ago in the All-Filipino, he was leading the league in scoring and rebounding, and he was just having an awesome conference,” Cone said.
“Unfortunately he went down with an injury. He decided to have surgery afterwards and then he was out for a year,” the coach added. “His health will play a crucial factor in our campaign here.”/PN
